The Sternberger-Welch-Hamer House

Built in 1901
The Sternberger-Hamer House was built by German immigrant Emanuel Sternberger in 1901. The beautiful Queen Anne architecture really stands out, there aren’t many like it left in this County. Most of these houses were constructed by local contractors without using an architect during this areas boom period.
Emanuel was born in Germany, October of 1859. His Mother was a school teacher. He arrived in Marlboro County, South Carolina in 1874 with his brother. Soon after, he rented a building where he lived and also bought and sold local goods. With that money he started buying and selling land until he had the funds to build one of the largest department stores in the state.
Queen Anne Victorian style architecture was one of the most popular Victorian architectural styles to emerge in the United States from 1880 to 1910. Queen Anne Homes usually have a steep roof, large dormers, an asymmetrical front facade and a large front porch with beautiful wood trim. A front corner tower with a conical roof is also a distinctive feature of the Queen Anne Style.
This one is so incredible in its architecture , and especially that it’s abandoned! I can’t tell what the green roof is made from, but I would think the original would’ve been shake or tin.🤔

That Queen Anne house is so pretty. I know that the German immigrants were awesome builders. I’ve heard that the furniture they built is highly sought after. This house has to be one of my favorites. Love all the detail and the old glass is beautiful. The porch looks so inviting. I would love to sit in one of those rockers. Love ❤️ it!!!
