Victorian Italianate in Old Florida
Isn’t this a lovely place in Old Florida…
The Denham Inn was built by John Denham in 1872. It’s a beautiful example of Victorian Italianate architecture in Monticello, Florida. Monticello, it’s name means “little mountain” in Italian, is outside of Tallahassee and not far from the Georgia State line. The town includes Indian Mounds and many historic buildings like the Perkins Opera House and Monticello Old Jail Museum.
John Denham’s parents immigrated from Dunbar, Scotland to Baltimore, Maryland in 1832 when John was 14 years old. The family eventually ended up in Monticello, Florida. John was a hard worker and became very successful. He shipped merchandise down the St. Marks river to faraway ports.
John married Caroline Ellen Marvin in 1848 and they would go on to have eleven children. The Denham family are all buried at the Roseland Cemetery in Monticello.
Today the Denham Inn is an award winning Bed and Breakfast with six private rooms and unique period antiques throughout. 555 W Palmer Mill Rd. Monticello, FL 32344. The Inn is located in the Historic District four blocks from the center of the antebellum town. The building has been restored to it’s original elegance and is listed on the National Historic Register.
Have you heard of this Bed and Breakfast before? I would love to know if you’ve stayed here.
The Denham house in Monticello is so pretty with its huge porch. I’m so glad it’s one that survived and is now a bed and breakfast. I would love to stay there.
I would too. It’s a pretty town. 🙂
