Little White Church in Wacahoota
This is the Wacahoota United Methodist Church and Cemetery in Williston, FLorida. The Church was brought together in the 1850’s and this is the third worship building at this location. There are no bathrooms or electricity and it’s thought to be one of the oldest Methodist Churches in Florida still holding services.
Williston is southwest of Gainesville in Levy Co. Compared to other small towns in Central Florida, this one hasn’t changed too much. In 1853 Dr. James M. Willis founded the town and named it after himself. He started a thriving cucumber plantation that became one of the largest producers of cucumbers in the world. Many train cars would be full of cucumbers when the train left the station.
This small town is also outside of Ocala, Florida which is known as horse country. Williston is the birthplace of the horse Foolish Pleasure, the winner of the 1975 Kentucky Derby.
This little church from Wacahoota reminds me of my childhood church. Love the picture of the outside with the purple flower.
