Southern Gothic Mansion in Appalachia

Upon entering Madison County everything started reminding me of the television show The Waltons, which aired from 1972 to 1981. I’ve read The Waltons was filmed in California but it still gave me that feeing of kinship, family ties, rugged terrain and pride for heritage. This area is nestled in the mountains of Western North Carolina on the banks of the French Broad River and is filled with mountain culture. The Jeff White house was built in the late 1800’s in Madison County, North Carolina. This Historic home was added to the National Register of Historic Places, June 05, 1975.
It sits on 5 acres and when I was there it was so overgrown you could barely see the house. I’ve been told someone lives behind it and there was a thin path mowed around the perimeter of the home. I had no intentions of going in or touching anything, I just wanted to record it’s image for history’s sake. These old houses are disappearing quickly and the craftsmanship and beauty should be recorded in my opinion. It’s a two-story, T-shaped frame Farmhouse with three large bay windows. You can see the lovely ornamentation that resembles lace in the pictures. I’m not sure who built the home but I would love to know who designed the trim. It was built with timber from the nearby forests and is quite grand in stature. Unfortunately, with the way it sits in the mountain and the overgrowth, it’s hard to capture just how spectacular this place is.
Late one evening. I found her there…watching…waiting..as though she was expecting me. I stood, mesmerized by her imposing presence, her majestic stature, her ornate woodwork as jewels hanging from her. I was drawn in by a sense of yearning to know more and upon approaching through knee-deep weeds and vines, I felt as though I was walking back in time. I tripped over an old rusty tricycle and I noticed it had the same little horn on it as I had as a child. I sensed a certain familiarity. Suddenly, I was overcome by the most fragrant honeysuckle vine that had taken over the chimney at the side of the house. Night was approaching as a gentle wind blew and softly rocked the two lone rockers on the porch as if the lovely old lady in disarray and fading beauty was beckoning me to stay . I was to return many times thereafter.
